Aphelion is when the Earth is at its farthest point from the sun. In Antarctica, this translates to a world of total or twilight darkness. the scene here shows Mount Erebus (active volcano on Ross Island, Antarctica) during Civil Twilight where the sun is still below the horizon, but throws enough light to illuminate geographic features.
